History / About

Bear Feat Life Coaching is based on the idea of positive change, whether that is helping one cope with past and existing issues or helping them tackle new challenges or roadblocks.

The name 'Bear Feat' originates from the 'Bear Philosophy' (mentioned below). It is coupled with the idea that sessions can take place outdoors such as walking through magnificent landscapes and beaches, sometimes in 'bare feet' (see, it wasn't a spelling error!). However, sessions can also be conducted in a therapy room based in Truro, Cornwall. Ongoing treatments tend to have a mixture of both outdoor and indoor sessions.

Why the outdoors? Why Surfing, SUPing and Walking?:

The connection between outdoor activities, positive psychology and flow (a concept where you are in perfect competition with an activity, which is a strong evoker of wellbeing and happiness) is well founded. Most outdoor activities are a great evoker of mindfulness and flow; they are also a great advocate of increasing one’s wellness whilst stretching one’s comfort barrier, thus increasing resilience.

The simple act of being outside and walking through a session has many advantages as well as the obvious benefits of being immersed in beautiful scenery. Chief of these is the brain's tendency to release 'growth factors', these are chemicals that promote the growth of new blood vessels to the brain and even promote the survival of new brain cells while stimulating brain health. But there are many other important factors that simply being outdoors can give us, the investigation into forest bathing (started by Japanese researchers in the 80's) demonstrates how the body shifts towards our parasympathetic nervous system and experiences a significant decrease in Cortisol (the stress hormone) by just being in nature for 30 minutes. Research has confirmed the benefits of being outdoors and its link to overall wellbeing time and time again.

The result of a session outdoors is an inspirational and unique method to increase psychological and physical wellbeing.

The Bear Feat Philosophy

The Bearrepresents a challenge that we face and is by no means a comfortable situation. In the real world if you encounter a bear on the trail the advice is to stop what you are doing and evaluate the situation. Identify yourself by speaking in a calm, appeasing tone and then back away slowly in the direction you came. Walk, don’t run, and keep your eye on the bear so you can see how it will react.

It would be scary and easy for people to feel that the bear would eventually get the better of them. Furthermore most would, rather than face the situation, seek to evade it. But we have all had to confront situations that are scary and very difficult to tackle - avoiding them is a common response. However, this does not make these dilemmas go away and continuing to avoid them can negatively impact one's wellbeing and mental state.

At Bear Feat Life Coaching we work on facing these situations and accomplishing the Featsthat mean the most to us. The aim is to improve one's overall wellbeing, to find a better life-balance and peace of mind.  We do this by taking time to evaluate the situation and develop and implement strategies that enable us to continue on down the trail in a positive state of mind and without fear of the ‘Bear’.

And if you say our name out loud, you might hear ‘Bare Feet’ which seems like a mistake but actually hints at something special in the work that we do. Part of what makes Bear Feat Life Coaching different is the focus on engagement with the natural world through surfing and other outdoor pursuits. Bear Feat is all about getting in touch with our essential nature and finding the flow in all that we do!
